Sullivan Papain Secures One Of 2017’s Largest Medical Malpractice Verdicts in NY

Sullivan Papain Block McGrath & Cannavo P.C. (SPBMC) won a stunning $26 million medical malpractice jury verdict last week in Kings County Supreme Court on behalf of its client, a seven-year-old girl who was born deaf due to a hospital’s negligence.

Jim Wilkens, of counsel to SPBMC, represented the plaintiff during the one-month trial. The jury awarded the substantial amount to the girl for her for past and future pain and suffering and medical expenses stemming from her deafness and other injuries, including life-long vocal cord paralysis.

A team of Lewis Brisbois attorneys were able to prove that Dexter Hysol Aerospace LLC, a staffing services company, was not at fault for the death of a former employee. Managing partner Scott Masterson, partner Florence McClain, and associate Ashley Waller convinced a Los Angeles County jury that Velma Searcy, an electrical technician from 1982 to 1987, did not contract malignant mesothelioma as the result of occupational asbestos exposure.

The plaintiffs, the four children of Velma Searcy, filed suit against Dexter Hysol and numerous others for wrongful death, negligence, strict products liability, and punitive damages. Dexter Hysol was the only defendant remaining at the time of trial.
